The MAKO is inspired by the elegance and aggressiveness of sharks.
The Mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) is a beautiful predator already described in 1952 by E. Hemingway in a heart-breaking conflict between man and animal. It is currently one of the fastest and most powerful known shark. It can reach the speed of 70 km/h and jump up to 5 meters out of the water. The Mako is similar to a powerful motorbike, which runs on the track or on desert streets, where it cannot harm anyone.
For each work I do, I get inspiration from a totemic animal that I use as a guide for the development of the style and the evolution of the shape. The shark is one of the animals that embodies the concept of speed and elegance at their best; it is very ancient, yet it has unchanged characteristics over time as if it was perfect in its nature since its first appearance on earth. This new “muscle structure” made of cartilage and abrasive skin, is the unusual and peculiar mechanic base of the Ducati 999. I had the opportunity to face myself with this motorbike back in 2006, for my dissertation degree on the Sculpture Desmo ∞ (infinito) motorbike that was a source of inspiration for prestigious motorcycle manufacturers.

The mechanical base is substantially standard, apart from the stainless exhaust pipe and the approved carbon fiber exhaust (made under my supervision by Mass of Antonio Saitta), and the updated ignition control unit which can compensate the increased air flow to the airbox conveyors fitted with filters more permeable than the Ducati Performance ones.
All the original fairings, with the exception of the front fender, have been eliminated in order to model the new ones directly on the chassis and on the mechanics. The sculptural constructive technique implies the application of small quantities of clay which gradually delineates the general shapes. Surfaces are defined with blades and tools, and the specular part is created with the “points technique”.
The final symmetry is defined once the first piece of fiberglass is extracted from the plaster casts, through the smoothing down and overlapping of polyester fillers.
From a design stand point I wanted to create a very small characterized windscreen, as in the Desmo Infinito, by a substantial lateral lug wrench, more able to direct air towards the air intakes of the airbox, open as if they were the jaw of the shark. The “face”, as in the family of Lamnidi, is typically angular and sharp, able to better cut through the air.
The side is characterized by short fairings that wrap the mechanics and thus covering on the right side the (not very elegant) electrical system and completely showing the well-known Ducati trellis frame.
I wanted the hulls to be as tighter as possible to maximize the aerodynamic performance. In order to better direct the air flow I modelled, just below the airbox conveyors, two small appendages as if they were the stabilizing pectoral fins. The small lower tip resembles the shape of the belly of the shark that is tapering in the middle with two appendices that frame the crankcase.
The tank capacity is 17 litres and it has, in the inside, the original fuel pump. Its curvilinear shape ensures the rider with a better centre of gravity and is more forward compared to the original tank. The tank surface is extremely chiselled and finely sculpted so that it could “stand on its own” even in the absence of all the other elements. The peculiar “whiplash” line of the bottom of the tail is connected to the tank by two small fins, emphasizing the sculptural and aggressive nature of the motorbike.
The tail, with its diagonal, flings the entire silhouette giving a major visual weight to the front part of the motorbike.

Mako Reventon draws its name from the exclusive colour scheme.
The same satin grey of the most famous Lamborghini Reventondresses the fairings leaving the newly produced full carbon kit half-seen.
The fairings are made with a peculiar aviation technique called VIP (Vacuum Infusion Process) and it is typically used for composite materials. VIP is a technique that uses vacuum pressure to drive resin into a laminate. Materials are laid dry into the mold and the vacuum is applied before resin is introduced. Once a complete vacuum is achieved, resin is literally sucked into the laminate via carefully placed tubing.
The result are light and performing parts, the top in order to combine the exclusive aesthetics and the overall lightness, allowing anyone to transform a Ducati 749 / 999 in an extraordinary weapon between the kerbs or on the best mountain roads.
